Re: Help finding a record
After looking into all this quite exstensively Laura, i feel that the only and possibly better way to go about this is to look into the CRS10 Documentations of Seaman.
These Series covers various Alphabetical Names , and if there is one for your Grand Father, it will hold all information that you may seek!
Harris R A to Harris Z | The National Archives
So clicking on this Link will take you to the Page where you can Start an Application as the other !
Good Luck
And to make things even more Complicated he may also have been serving in the COMNO during his period in which case again one has to apply , more Money!!
Cheers

Re: Help finding a record
Thank you both for this, I feel better as I thought I must be being stupid! I believe COMNO might have been a possibility.
It is my couisn providing info, my uncle is going to give me a ring so hopefully I can see if they have the medal/any other information.
I really appreciate the help and I'll be looking at all the links and following your kind advice.

Oh boy this is tough.
I have also looked at the Service Medals but cannot find any Medals issued to him ?? Strange that as you mention the Atlantic Star!! ??
Where did you see this, do you have the actual Medal at Hand?
Cheers

Yes I thought it odd as I looked through the naval medals lists on ancestry (I'm going to dig deeper with my uncle and see if they have the medal)

Re: Help finding a record
I've got extra info!:
Dad’s Identity Card no is CGE 3131950.
Dad’s medals are: -
1. 1939-45 Star and clasp (which is missing)
2. Atlantic Star.
3. War Medal, 1939-45, with an Oak Leaf (which is missing) I bought another in a Norwich medals shop, but have also lost that.
4. There should also be a Defence Medal which is missing.
5. He had a 1st class conduct badge on 7th Jan ’44.
I have the original box and notification that there should be six items.
Convoy Signalman C/JX 232569
He was released on 7th December 1945 (Class A) from HMS President.
Dad was wounded in action on 3rd Sept 1944 and again on 7th Jan 1945.

Re: Help finding a record
Well now Laura
The following indicates to me that he was then Royal Navy, not Merchant!
Convoy Signalman C/JX 232569
- eg: C/JX - Long service seaman from Chatham Port Division
The reason i could not find the correct Man!
Will have to start all over and see if i can possibly get any record on him in the RN.
Cheers
You can also read the Following page to guide you to possibly obtaining any Service Records.
Cheers
Royal Navy ratings enlisted after 1918 - The National Archives
PS Do you by ant chance have any Ship or Ships anywhere in your Paperwork that he served on or with??
Cheers

Re: Help finding a record
So Laura
Its for sure the MOD you will want to contact, as it will hold his Records!
Cheers
This is a short guide to records of Royal Navy ratings that enlisted and served after the First World War. Many of the records of ratings who served in the Second World War and all of the records for ratings that enlistedafter 1928, are held by the Ministry of Defence. However, the records of ratings that enlisted with the Royal Navy in or before 1928 and went on to serve in the Second World War may be held at The National Archives.
Obtain information about yourself held by MOD - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
How to apply
To make it easy for you to exercise your right under the Data Protection law, the MOD gives you different options to request your personal data from them.
Using one of MOD’s forms will make it easier to process your request.
Apply online
- Civilian personnel, ex-civilian personnel or ex-servicepersons should use this online form.
- Current servicepersons should download and complete the MOD 1694 and email or hand it into your local unit.
Note: These forms are not mandatory. MOD will also accept requests made in other ways (e.g., by post or email).
