Re: Can I get a Sateroom Steward job on any ship, if I have been living in California
I was offered a job when I was 70 but it was a job which was in line with what I knew, I questioned the person about my age and he wasn’t bothered and as he said the bloke I was reliving was in his 80s .But that was a different set of circumstances . And a specialised job. Cheers JS.

hi john sabourn
if i could only find out whom was looking back at me from my mirror when i shave in the morning then it would at least put my mind at ease, and im sure saying mirror mirror on the wall whom is the fairest of them all will not change the outcome.but i will give it a try in the morning.

Since we're doing the 'guess your age quiz' have a glance at my number and let me know what my chances are of stepping aboard a ship of the line.*☠️

No offence John but Captain Cook and the Endeavour are fully crewed. Ref Discharge book numbers were they not issued as per the Mercantile office depending on the area of the country that you registered in . My Number was issued in Liverpool in 1969.

Lewis like me you will probably have no desire to go back. I was refused an entry visa in the mid 70's for something that happened in the late 50's. But did manage to get in, in the mid '80's but signed on as a crew member on a bulk carrier, which had on board one of our containerised bagging factories to bag (1 tonne bags) 30,000 tonnes of alumina the vessel was carrying. Entered China again in 1990's, no visa, on a ferry from Hong Kong, but I was giving a presentation to Port Authorities and didn't have any problems entering. But China is not on my bucket list!!

Re: Can I get a Sateroom Steward job on any ship, if I have been living in California
A 16 year old first trip galley boy will join on day X and will receive number R00001
A 23 year old first trip junior engineer will join on the same day same port and will be given the number R00002
So numbers only show that you joined the MN in a certain period, not your age

Re: Can I get a Sateroom Steward job on any ship, if I have been living in California
As far as i have researched Ivan the first Numbers with the R Prefix started here
Discharge A numbers R397 - R29114 Dont know why that was ??
But yes you are correct in saying that it does not show age just periods.
The R 63---- as asked by John Gill is set between 1945 and 1955 so coud be anywhere in between.
Like mine R69---- Could be between 1956 and 1965
Cheers
