Thanks again Marian. My wife has actually done the Ancestry DNA test and received results back. From what I can see, there's little to link back to her Chinese ancestry. The DNA test does show one strong DNA match which we believe sits on the maternal site - again though, we just cannot work out where!

Re: Jan Ming Tan, Chief Steward, Liverpool, 1958
Update.
I've purchased the marriage certificate for Jan Ming Tan, image attached. Not the best quality but confirms the following:
- 29 years old at time of marriage, which would put his year of birth as 1914. This differs to everything else we know about his birth being 1912.
- confirms occupation as chief stewart, merchant service
- his wife was 17 when married, in 1943.
- Fathers name Foo Tee Tan.
- Address, (I think it) says Bankfield Road, Liverpool.
- Marriage witness is Eric Han or Haw.

Have added few documents on May Knight's thread

Your guess is as good as mine. I think my next step with Jan Ming will be to order his shipping records from the GRO. And while I’m doing that I’ll order my own granddads records as I know he served on the HMS Belfast as a petty officer during WW2.
