Fieldhouse, John Thomas, Fireman SS Avalona Star
On June 30, 1940, at 22:27 hrs. SS Avelona Star was torpedoed by U-43 and the vessel was abandoned. One crew member was killed. The position was 46.46N, 12.17W (about 220 miles NW of Cape Finisterre). The vessel foundered on July 1 in 46.59N, 11.39W. The master (George Earnest Hopper) and 83 crew members were rescued by SS Beignon q.v.
SS Beignon was torpedoed 5 hours later resulting in the loss of a further 3 survivors from the Avelona Star.
The four crew members who lost their lives are commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial Panel 12:
FIELDHOUSE, Fireman, JOHN THOMAS, S.S. Avelona Star (London). Merchant Navy. 1st July 1940. Age 63.
FINDLAY, Sailor, WILLIAM, S.S. Avelona Star (London). Merchant Navy. 1st July 1940. Age 24.
NELSON, Greaser, THOMAS, S.S. Avelona Star (London). Merchant Navy. 1st July 1940. Age 39.
STANLEY, Surgeon, HENRY, S.S. Avelona Star (London). Merchant Navy. 1st July 1940. Age 62.
John Thomas Fieldhouse was my great grandfather.
He was a merchant seaman for many years and had volunteered in later years.
I have a copy(from internet)of an ID card that could possibly be his, it has a photo but I have never seen a photo of my great granddad ever so not sure.
ID number is 391670.
He was born in 1877, West Bromwich, staffs.
Have tried to find as much info about him as possible but only have bits...
so I am hoping someone somewhere may be able to help/offer advice.
Regards,
Kevin.

Have him on FMP Site but just details as you have posted thee is no actual Image of him there? I have looked at the Records at Kew as well but cannot trace his CRS10 ,or Seamans Pouch which would hold a Pic of when he joined
Good luck
