Search on FRED MARSDEN
Morning Team from deep down south in Dunedin, NZ.
Firstly thanks for admittance into the forum - great to be here and looking around.
I am on the search for info on a Grandfather as part of our family research; the first one (ABS A. Gee) served in the RN WWI and WWII (MIA 11MAY1942 onboard HMS Lively); is now completed.
The second one is proving harder to determine where he went and what he did. I do however have the following information:
- Name - Fred Marsden (that is his full name)
- DOB 03NOV1888 @ Chorley, Lancashire.
- DOD 08SEP1966 @ Wesham Park Hospital, Kirkham, Lancashire.
- Served in the RN during WWI possibly as a gunner or seaman; thus far have only managed to track down service records for the RNVR (Mersey Division) where is was (No. Z2719)
- Then there is a big gap and no records but apparently in early WWII he joined the Merchant Navy doing convoy runs up through to Archangel.
- Thence he was down with the Merchant Navy in Nairobi where he caught Malaria.
- On recovery from that, he left the Merchant, returning London and became a volunteer fireman.
Can anyone shed any light on Fred's time in the Merchant Navy?
Appreciated, Pete

But will try again later who knows!
At FMP there seems to be no records for him,as well as the NA ??
Cheers
So you have this record of him then

Re: Search on FRED MARSDEN
Initially, just need to confirm the following is accurate -
- DOB 03NOV1888 @ Chorley, Lancashire.
- DOD 08SEP1966 @ Wesham Park Hospital, Kirkham, Lancashire.
Is this something found in searches or definitely known ?
Similar for: Served in the RN during WWI ?
To cross reference, possibly his parents names, wedding / wife, children would help,
The name is quite common for the area at the time with a birth in that
name alone shows up each year for 3 or 4 years.
If a gunner assigned to an MN ship he would be hard to trace.
Hope to hear from you soon and will do all pos to assist.
Keith.

Re: Search on FRED MARSDEN
Morning and apologies for my delayed responses; have been away on holidays and out of decent comms. Yes have this record but it took a while to decipher. Initially I was advised that he was RN but it seems that he was definitely RNVR and wouldve been on couple of shore bases (Victory VI, Victory I and Excellent) but also served onboard HMS Maldovia.

Hi Keith, the title of gunner was passed on to me from the family so not confirmed; from his military records he completed his time in the RNVR as an Able Seaman.
As to family connections:
Freds parents – Thomas and Jane Ann Marsden (nee Leech).
Married – Sarah Alice Marsden (nee Griffiths) @ Hinckley (Leicestershire) 30AUG1928.
Children - Definitely at least one daughter named Shirley.
Died – Wesham Park Hospital, Kirkham, Lancashire 08SEP1966 (aged 77 yrs).
Thats is all that I have unfortunately.
Pete

Morning, definitely WWII for his service in Merchant Navy during 1939 until he was sick. He went back to London after that and was a Auxilary Fireman there in 1940.
Regards.
