Yes John Smith married Winifred Emily Maloney ( born 1897 died 1975) in 1918. Waiting for marriage cert to arrive in post to say exactly when as first child was born in 1918!!

Thanks for looking Keith but Gran didn't re-marry, 11 children from 1st husband was enough of marriage for her! Had enough Grandchildren and great grandchildren to keep her happy.

Keith posted a 1911 census document that had a John Smith , Overseas Military, Jullundur Punjab in India. I was wondering where I should look next to find out more about this? Not sure where to go? Any suggestions anyone? all help kindly received!!

I searched for service records for 39257 and there doesn't appear to be any surviving service records for him, he was on the attached casualty file from the "burnt records"

Thanks Maureen, where did you find the copy posted? I could only find via help from the "Forces War records" the index card I posted earlier in the thread. Are there any articles, documents or books written about RHA and where they were in India 1905 -1914 that anyone knows of ? where would one look for this ?

In Ambala, India when ordered to mobilise on 31 August 1914. Sailed from Bombay 10 October 1914 and landed at Marseilles exactly a month later. Under command of 3rd (Ambala) Cavalry Brigade in 1st Indian Cavalry Division. Brigade exchanged with 5th (Mhow) Cavalry Brigade of 2nd Indian Cavalry Division on 15 September 1915 but A Battery RHA remained and came under command of Mhow Brigade in October 1915.

I have a sub to Findmypast so I'm used to browsing the records. They are still being updated as I believe they are still working on the Burnt Records. I'll have a check on the other records but I think it may be Ancestry that has some of those articles, few and far between though!
