Hello Dennis, My name is Graham Mcglone. Hey, I was on the Port Pirie same time as you. signed-on 3 June 1964 - signed-off 27 Oct 1964 at KG5. Far as I remember we went to Australia via Piraeus, Famagusta and Suez Canal, to Melbourne and Sydney - then over to Kiwi. I was an OS on that trip. The captain was a real gentleman called Captain Harry Conby.
I do remember the bosun Sammy Logan from Belfast and think he had his AB nephew with him. I remember Dave Moorcroft, Jimmy Waddel, and a DHU called Dave Knight. Terry Willcox (who is a member on this website) was the galley boy. Another DHU was called John Sheppard. John and I became bloody inseperable and we sail together many times over the years. In fact we were best man at each others wedding and godfather to our respective kids.
Do let me know if you remember any other crew or incidents on that trip Dennis. Nice to be in touch again mate.

Hello Stan, I joined the Port Pirie fresh out of the Vindi in November 1963 and did four trips in her to October 1964 (from deck boy to OS). Another guy on this site (Dennis Earle) was also on the Pirie in 1964. Best wishes Graham Mcglone

Hi Stan, I sent off for copies of my old ships crew agreements (articles) and official logbooks. On the Port Pirie for the trip to Australia December 1963 to April 1964 it lists an EDH by the name of Alfred Hackett - is that you? If it was then you paid off with £79 7s 6d.
it also states that A . Hackett took 7 days official leave in Melbourne. Does that ring a bell?
These logbooks are bloody interesting documents. You can see who got logged and why and who got DR's and who jumped ship. They're awash with history and nostalgia.

Hi Terry looking at my discharge book,I or we signed off in Antwerp on the 26th april 1964,so must have just missed you.On arrival the police came down and arrested an ab from Shetland. He and a mate joined in london when we sailed. His friend went overboard in the Meddie xmas eve, spent xmas morning up in the crows nest looking for him.the Mate told me to look for a football, because he said thats what chance we had.of finding him.I believe the skipper or police believed the Shelty had thrown him over, nothing about it all trip, untill Antwerp.Quite a few of the crew went up to the police station and objecting to his arrest ,but were told to move on or be arrested,we must have just missed each other, were did you join her Stan
