Merchant Navy Songs
As there are already a couple of songs on this site from my friend Ron Baxter's collection of songs gathered during his time at sea with Clan Line (1966-1974), I thought it worth flagging up where the rest of them may be found.
A couple of years ago I started a PermaThread on the Mudcat forum (it's an American website initially devoted to discussions of folk and blues music, but extensively used by many on this side of the pond for the purposes of airing views on more general topics in the folk and traditional music fields. It's also home to a lyric database, the Digital Tradition. It offered a home on the web for the songs Ron collected, others that he has composed since, and other material we used in our presentation "Farewell to the Clan Line", produced initially for the Fylde Folk Festival and presented subsequently to varied audiences across the country.
From my intro to the PermaThread:-
"The aim of this thread is two-fold:-
a) to set out the songs and fragments that my colleague Ron Baxter collected during his time in the British Merchant Navy (1966-1974 with Clan Line and other companies belonging to British & Commonwealth Shipping), along with other material he composed then and more recently.
b) to draw out any other songs/verses/fragments from the memories of anyone who may have come across similar material."
Here's the link:-

I am still getting occasional new (old?) material added to the thread. Hope you enjoy the read. If it jogs any memories, feel free to send in any fragments, reminiscences etc. Thanks for reading thus far!
All the best
Ross Campbell

With A Little Help From My Merchant Navy Friends”.
“With A Little Help From My Merchant Navy Friends” will initially be a digital affair, it will certainly begin that way. The concept will be built up and all progress reported within the blog http://hernamewasss.blogspot.com/ all material may eventually be published in some format and used for exhibitions, remembrance services etc, for fund raising or as a giveaway etc. Also, distributed to schools, Libraries, Exhibitions etc.
Wondered if you would be interested in contributing, this could be just from adding your link and telling all more, hence free advertising and a chance to promote all further to donating relevant related chapters, verse poems, salty tales etc etc. Any choice would be yours, looking to donate and or sell at a donation cost etc to those interested. All funds raised will go to MN good cause, Memorials etc.
With A Little Help From My Merchant Navy Friends” follow progress or join in at: http://hernamewasss.blogspot.com/
A new concept, just taking off, no obligation - require content and permission initially, time frame for completion is long as said all is new, so removal / cancellation would be easy if required.
jUST REQUIRE A PLEDGE.
