Trampship
Trampship
Six thousand tons in battered steel,
tempered by storm from truck to keel.
Bearing scars received worldwide,
patches of rust along her side.
In need of paint, no gracious maiden,
she plows her way deeply laden.
Bluff of bow, broad of beam,
she tramps the oceans, driven by steam.
Square bridge weathered by driven spray,
keeps constant lookout night and day.
Soot caked funnel, woodwork bleached by salt,
constant journey knowing little halt.
Not built for beauty nor for play,
just a working seahorse, that`s her way.
Holds crammed full with God knows what ?
Haul anything anywhere, that`s her lot.
Maybe general cargo or holds filled with coal,
maybe loco`s on deck, God how she`ll roll!
Maybe iron ore, timber, phosphates or grain,
anything anywhere it`s all the same.
Just not for her a regular run,
she goes where ever deals are done.
Plunging foc`sle, reeling masts,
through endless distance her voyage lasts.
You can`t sign in her for a three week trip,
she`s away for ever, an old trampship.
