The Sailor.
THE SAILOR
This one is a sailor, it`s in his face,
set to a sun, to a wind, to a sea.
He knows a shifting heaving deck,
It`s where he signed to be.
He knows a bridge and a `trick` at the wheel,
and a lookout`s lonely `spell`.
He knows a climb, a reeling mast,
knows to hold hard and well.
He knows of ropes and wires, of cleats and bitts,
of fairleads and windlass and chain.
He knows hatches and winches, derricks and blocks,
and cargoes like timber and grain.
He knows a foc`sle and a poop,
and an `island` and a `well`.
He knows a world of calm and peace,
and a raging world of hell.
He knows heat from a blazing sun,
and the burn of scorching steel.
He knows the pain of cold, the bite of ice,
and a numbness that cannot feel.
He knows a fog, a smothering cloak,
and a startled lookouts yell.
He knows a siren`s warning boom,
and the clanging of a bell.
He knows a dawn, a golden day,
and the blackness of a night.
He knows a sky and many a star,
and the `loom` of flashing light.
He knows storm and bedlams tumultuous shriek,
and the crushing weight of a sea.
He knows thunderous roar of crashing wave,
and the fear of a rockbound `lee`.
This one is a sailor, it`s in his face,
he`s lost to a world of sea.
His home is a shifting heaving deck,
it`s where he signed to be.
