Victoria drummond mbe
VICTORIA DRUMMOND MBE
She was loaded down with china clay,
The BONITA sailed for the USA.
It was on an August summer day,
Luftwaffe planes came out to play.
Victoria Drummond the Chief Engineer,
Tended the engines, the enemy near.
Picked up their speed and muffled her fear,
Ordered her crew out into the clear.
The BONITA was armed with nary a gun,
The Condor above had them on the run.
Miss Drummond below where great damage was done,
As a ship's engineer, she was second to none.
She stayed at her post while making repair,
Bullets and shrapnel tore through the air.
Steam lines were mended with greatest of care,
When the battle was over BONITA was there.
So when you remember those heroes of yore,
Remember the ones who served off the shore.
Victoria Drummond, who came to the fore,
And won a Lloyds Medal, while serving in War.

Re: Victoria drummond mbe
Victoria Drummond was born at Megginch Castle, Perthshire. She was named after her godmother, Queen Victoria. Victoria became the first British woman marine engineer, and the first woman member of the Institute of Marine Engineers. She was awarded an MBE and Lloyds war medal for bravery at sea during the Second World War.
Thanks Ian for your penned tribute.

Re: Victoria drummond mbe
You are welcome, I have found a fair number of women who served in the Merchant Navy in my research over the years. Little doubt given that time frame women were not so welcome in what we consider a man's world. There were a number of women in the US Merchant marine also and not forgetting the Canadian women who sailed as radio operators often on Norwegian ships. They should not be forgotten with the passage of time.
