NEPTUNE'S SONS

How many lads who liked to roam,
Found solace away from home.
Away from loved ones back ashore,
The storms and gales his to ignore.

Some very poor, poor as can be,
Sought a fortune on the sea.
Left their problems far behind,
The past is dead, the future blind.

Some gained a future, rose in rank,
Kept their steamers off the bank.
Misfortune struck once in awhile,
And stranded them on a lonely isle.

How many who stood watch out there,
Pause to think, or think to care.
Consider what a gift to me,
Was given through a life at sea.

The day must come for every soul,
Who manned the ships, who paid the toll.
To cross the bar with final sigh,
To enter heaven, head held high.
