TORMALINE

'Twas a summer day remembered well,
Just south of Saint Pierre.
We sent our dories after fish,
Our long lines set with care.

'Twas nearing noon, the fog came in,
And the fishing was just grand.
When the sky turned dark, eclipsed the sun,
We were miles away from land.

We could not see the TORMALINE,
Our home away from home.
But a bell rang out to give us cheer,
Her ring to us well known.

We brought our dories back aboard,
Near the closing of the day.
The fog dispersed, the wind came on,
And we were underway.

The sun returned to grace our day,
And set into the sea.
Our hold is full, the catch is in,
And dreams are left to me.

Your mention of the Newfoundland dog brings to mind my Aunts neighbor in Sydney who had two of them who were certainly part of that family. They had several children (the neighbor) and the main duty of those two dogs was to mind the kids during the day which they did. They lived on the harbor and picnics to the shore were often on order. I can well recall how those two dogs would herd the kids here and there keeping them out of harm's way. I believe they taught the kids how to swim, great and caring dogs they were.

Written with my Grandpa in mind who was a Grand Banks fisherman many years ago now. He had his own schooner and at some point my Mother worked aboard as cook. I have never much cared for cod fish but she could serve it up every Friday to us until I left home for the service. Bye the bye I miss Mother very much but not the cod fish dried or otherwise.
