Incident at ocracoke
INCIDENT AT OCRACOKE
What's that? Whispered the frightened young girl,
As she clutched the man's hand at her side.
Don't know, must be some weary old soul,
What's drifted ashore with the tide.
Last night we heard and explosion,
And pondered at what it might be.
It's nothing somebody suggested,
Just a strange sound come in from the sea.
The authorities came to remove him,
And we asked how he happened along,
Well, it happens this way during wartime,
When the tankers come sailing along.
When they pass t'ween the sub and the shoreline,
With the lights of the cities aglow,
The eels speed swift through the water,
By deduction, the rest you should know.
For the greed of the dollar almighty,
The lights must stay lit as before,
And the seamen are nothing but flotsam,
Like cargo washed up on the shore.
