#30... The only Kangaroo one I can find at the moment is Titled Kangaroo. Is six verses to and the first one is-
Kangaroo, Kangaroo the spirit of Australia, that redeems from utter failure, from perfect desolation, and warrants the creation, of this fifth part of the Earth, which would seem an afterbirth, not conceived in the beginning ( for God bless"d His work at first, and saw that it was good) but emerg"d at the first sinning , when the ground was therefore curst, and hence the barren wood! Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
Or by Richard Whately 1787-1863... There is a place in distant seas, Full of contrarieties. There, beasts have mallards bills and legs, have spurs like cocks, like hens lay eggs. There parrots walk upon the ground, and grass upon the trees is found, on other trees another wonder! Leaves without upper sides or under. There pears you"ll scarce with hatchet cut, stones are outside the cherry put; Swans are not white, but black as soot, There neither leaf nor root, nor fruit will any Christian palate suit. Unless in desperate need you"d fill ye with root of fern and stalk of lily. There missiles to far distance sent come whizzing back from whence they went..................etc etc etc last line Now of what place could such strange tales be told with truth save New South Wales. Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
The kangaroo is an incredible creature. The manner of the movement is unlike that of any other animal. It carries it's young in a pouch, the young being born looking like a half grown tadpole. It has to crawl from the birth canal along the mothers stomach until it find the pouch. There it attaches to a teat and stay there for some time. Meanwhile the mother is rooted by another male, but the embryo will not develop until the one in the pouch leaves home. Even then the embryo will not develop if there is not enough food around. It will only develop when there is.

I was told at the age of 12 that you could get 5 baby kangaroos on a tablespoon. Even then must of had some Australian teachers in the UK. Cheers JS

Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
The baron and the Other Richard were deeply immersed in homesickness when their lines were penned. There were those, however who were determined to meet the differences head on and kick the a**se of adversity. My 'Old Dutch' is the descendant of a convict for petty theft (in Bath UK in 1815) to feed himself but got freedom, married and successfully farmed the fertile Southern Tablelands. They built their home in the virgin bush and a little stream ran before it. As idyllic as any I saw in Britain. Her father's father was born at sea on a sailing ship from Plymouth 175 years ago and settled in the Tablelands where they helped build our famous merino wool industry. A first generation Aussie I always felt proud when working overseas for the now (sadly) restructured 'Queensland'. Incidentally, my next door neighbour and mate of 25 years always throws 'bloody' in when he gets stuck for a word. They sold some property a few years ago and cruise in great style on the cunarders and the like.
The going could be tough but the hard earned rewards could certainly be worth it. My last couple of 'old cobber's' Newsletters shed some light on the times : spotlight .

Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
Someone turned ‘Hey Ya’ into Australia’s new national anthem:
12 January 2015
Splicing together some you beaut images of kangaroos boxing and Aussies doing Aussie things with stock footage of the late Gough Whitlam, Midnight Oil, Kylie and The Wiggles, the track is a celebration of all things “down under” including mateship, mates, cricket, mates and our epic stockpile of natural resources. Did we mention mates? And for those being turned back at our borders, please consider this line: “Why ya why ya why ya/Not living in Australia when you know we are so happy here.” Indeed.

Lyrics
My country don’t share no borders
‘Cos of all the waters that surround our land
Thank god for our resources
‘Cos they are the sources of our wealthy land
Don’t try to find the capital
Or fight the animals
You’re on your own
Just drive from town to paradise
And you’ll see why we call Australia home

Straya
You think you’ve got it
Oh you think you’ve got it
But have you got a rock where there is nothing at all
We get together
Oh we get together
The weather’s always better when there’s cricket involved
And we believe that mateship is forever
We’re all mates, we’re all mates, we’re all mates
We’re all mates, we’re all mates
And we’re multicultural
So why ya why ya
Why ya why ya why ya
Not living in Australia when you know we are so happy here

Alright now fellas

Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
#37... Richard your post brings back memories of the way I envisioned Australia in the 50"s. It was great in the likes of Japan and other places in the Far East, wine women and song so to speak, however on coming down to Oz was always like coming home and back to ones senses. I think to most seamen who ploughed the Oceans in those days, Australia may have meant different things to different people, it did mean over ridingly to most of us stability and people who spoke English and made one very welcome ( as long as you left their Sheila"s alone) It was a much scarcer populated country in those days and still had plenty of morals left, such as a fair days work for a fair days pay, it like most other countries has gone through different phases the same as most countries, but I always shudder when some politician says such and such a country is doing so and so and hold them up as an example. Australia need take no one else as an example they make their own laws and up to now are mostly the will of the people. Australia should be an example to the rest of the world as how handfuls of settlers made such a country what it is. Australia did well by me and tens of thousands of others, there were many who emigrated here in the 60s and 70s who couldnt cut the mustard when times were easier and returned to the UK. Most of my friends came out here in the 50"s and stayed, I doubt very much they would have had such a good life in the UK. My only regret is that I wasnt out here sooner to live permanently. Australia is home to me now. It is a country you could spend all your life discovering in all its different aspects, I suppose you either love it or hate it. Cheers JS

Re: The would be National Anthem of Australia
At junior school our teacher, a Miss Buchanan, hailed from Brisbane and had lived in UK for many years. I learned more about Kangaroos and Aboriginals from here than I have living here for over 30 years. Five roo babies on a tea spoon is Ok but do not confuse them with your medication, you could end up jumping all over the place.
