I sailed on the Salaverry in 1961/2 first voyage was coasting round GB and near continent ,then deep sea to West Indies- east coast south america thru' panama then down the coast stopping at various ports to Valparaiso-a tremendous place. Then back up again back thru' the canal stopping at Curacao for "bunkers" then home --what a trip that was.

You would save money today, no bars all the way down the coast. Nothing, crabs Nada.
Only bar left open is the Scandi Bar in Valpo. No Sailors to keep them going today.

Do ships still sail to west coast for fishmeal, ? Our cargo caught fire comeing home, what a smell, yuk never seen such huge flocks of pelicans and other birds in my life as down west coast. And so many fishing boats. They built them on the beach at callao.
