I like the old one (Oriana), seems like only yesterday (24/10 /60), we joined at Barrow for the maiden voyage, paid off Southampton March 61, nice ship we were very impressed with the accomadation, 2 to a cabin, big change from the Cunard and CPR, anything from 6-14 men to a room, still preferred the Cunard though.

Hi. When were you on the Oriana? I was on from August 1969 to July 1970 (left just prior to the major fire in Southampton Water)

It looks like we were both on the Oriana at the same time. What were you on board, I was an Assistant Lecky.

    Talking Maloja p&o

I sailed on the SS MALOJA of P&O in 1953. She was on the Aussie emmigrant £10 run She was black hull and two tall black funnels with buff upperworks and her sister ship the Mooltan was famous because of smallpox epidemics. I was waiter but got promoted to Public Room Stwd on return voyage, think the original guy jumped ship. On arriving Fremantle rushed ashore after work only to find the pubs ( FIRST & LAST) had shut at 1800 hours. Told that we would be OK when we got to Brisbane as pubs opened later. Three of us trotted up the road there and entered the first well lighted hotel we came too. Very crowded ,all at tables anyway we found a corner one and called the waiter over and ordered. Drank quickly and reordered a few times and the next time the waiter was a bit peed off so asked for bigger drinks which we got. Next time we were ready for a change of venue and asked for the bill. The waiter looked at us in amazement. Bill he said,Christ arnt you guys guests, this is a private wedding party........ He then advised us to go out singly to the loo and just keep going, which we hurriedly did, wishing the happy couple happiness & prosperity.

    Hi

I was on Oronsay 1963 and also did some boxing, I have a set of pictures which were taken by the ship's photographer during the fight, I fought a guy (heavyweight) by the name of 'Olaf' QM, and knocked him out in the 3rd round.
