Full page in this paper entitled “ Have we witnessed the death of the humble tie ….. and knot before time “ I wonder if the knot bit is an error in spelling or a joke.it is apparently vogue in the corporate world to go tieless now , so all you copycats can follow suit , that could be another joke ?. Apparently George Clooney has helped to kill off the tie ! And this is news ? I was thinking of replying to this world stopping article saying I was retaining my tie as it held my collar together and saved me looking for a button to sew on. But knew they would never print such interesting observations. Cheers JS

Going tieless seems to be the modern form of individuality by not conforming to the yoke of conventional attire. Along with many aboard here I wore a tie throughout my career as a steward/waiter, even go-ashores weather permitting were rig of the day. Funerals, weddings, the occasional black tie do is about most men’s usual attire. In my local anyone spotted wearing a tie,not black,was treated with suspicion. I certainly don’t miss them, in fact although I’ve still got a drawer full I doubt any shirt I own would button up to wear one.

I my opinion wearing suit with an open neck shirt doesn't look right.
If you take the trouble to wear a suit, wear a tie.

Just think of all those poor people Vic who can’t afford a tie. Maybe that’s why they display a bootlace around the neck, wonder if a piece of string would have the same affect ? They could always cut a piece off the piece holding the yellow ribbon round the old oak tree. Cheers JS.

My summer attire is simple. Tshirt, shorts and to dress up I put on my thongs. Any place that does not accept this rig I consider not my style of venue. Do not think that I could even work out how to knot up a tie. As was told quiet a while ago? That retirement is not all its cracked up to be. I totally agree it is a fecking lot better than I ever imagined

That last time I wore anything like a suit was when we had the Vindi reunions in Sydney, loved it, wore my blazer with my Vindi badge on the pocket, MN tie, grey slacks, looked great, then when we went to NZ for three years and came back down here to Cooma never had the chance again, took the Badge off and gave the jacket to the Salvos, now it's jeans and jumpers, but still got a line up of ties, one with lipstick on the inside, belonging to God knows who.

I’m sitting here waiting for a taxi to take me to the local medical centre for a body scan Des. A bit chilly this morning so have dug out the only long sleeved pullover I possess , it is 44 years old and as good as new . unfortuanetley it has a badge on the left breast knitted in two colours red and gold and shows the name of a ship , a deep sea diving bell, and the words Naval Party 1007 in gold. Hope no medical staff notice and ask awkward questions as may have to say my lips are sealed as such a long time ago, and will just say I signed the official secrets acts , which is a lie as I didn’t. Just remember what I want to remember and they would be no wiser in any case. Cheers JS

I last wore a tie on December 3 1997, the day I took early retirement with a handsome package and great super.

Still have one, my MN tie which I always take with me on a cruise.
It is in the inside pocket of my jacket so If IO do need one there it is.

I stopped wearing socks in about 2010, I discovered my feet are too far away from my hands.
