Re: Bayonets at da ready
The concept of a six month boot camp style serve for those over 18 was suggested here in Oz some years ago.
The concept was not so much arms but to instill a sense of general well being and self survival.
Teaching some basic subjects such as we learned at sea, like doing your on washing, learning to cook etc.
The bill passed the parliament but a change of gov and it was never implemented, sounds as though your PM is thinking along similar lines.

Happy daze John in Oz.

After the general election on July 4th this idea will vanish into the mists of time together with the Tory clowns who have suggested it.
Just a gimmick to snatch the headlines for a couple of days.

Re: Bayonets at da ready
If national service in some form or other is not introduced then any future war will be unsuccessful more than likely for those not prepared, this is not only the view of the UK pm .but also the view of Australian army generals. You only have to look at Russia and see the problem they have had during their fracas in Ukraine and their problems with a shortage of manpower . I believe Sweden and maybe other Scandavian countries are already better equipped for any uninvited guests and good on them for having the foresight before it’s too late. Those same Tory or labour clowns or whatever they maybe will again enter an unwanted war unprepared as they were the last one ,only this time may not get away with it , as there is not the strength of mind and body there as of old.

Re: Bayonets at da ready
I think that there is a current malaise in the view that serve without recompense is a Mugs game! In my old fart day belonging to a youth organisation such as the scouts, Boys Brigade , Girl Guides was considered to be a good way to gain basic skills and have some Fun it also helped in-still a bit discipline and self respect . I was in the BB and it gave me a strong spring board to prepare me for Life’s up and downs. My son went into the Scouts and again it prepared him for life and sparked many interests which still exercise his mind Today .
As for National service that’s a different concept as there is No choice in the matter it would be a good idea for some and help them develop into resilient people . But as always the people who really needed it, would dodge going with the help of their snowflake Parents .
Service is concept that is currently dead in the water for the Majority of younger generation as a lot have been turned away from the concept by education system which has had its core erroded by successive Governments whose aim was to politicise youth by tinkering with the curriculum and removing competition, ambition and self worth thus allowing a more compliant population . Some people call it social engineering, this has failed miserably in that recent generations have come to the view all by themselves that they can survive life’s travails as long as someone else picks up the slack and they have no responsibility for the things that go on around them . That train has Hit the Buffers.

Re: Bayonets at da ready
I think that most western gov.s are of the opinion that boots on the ground won't matter if it all goes off, Russia and China are probably of the same opinion. Putin would probably like others to join Ukraine, so he can plonk a biggie on them, and save all that money he's spending.
When it all finally goes off, it'll last about 25 minutes. I think the kids will like being in the services, just think about all that drone flying, and button pressing.

Re: Bayonets at da ready
Any biggies and there won’t be any need for money it will be obsolete. Just take what you want the same mentality as these neathandrical people who in riots take from stores. When no stores to take from the world goes back to the Dark Ages , some are already almost adapted to that life today. Their intelligence is the same as their morals ,zero. Crime on our streets was unheard of to the extent it is today. Moral fibre one would spend years trying to find is so scarce in today’s world. Everyone wants something for nothing . Maybe a biggie would be the answer and start from scratch all over again , maybe a different animal species maybe the answer ? Maybe the planet of the apes was a film of the future ? Cheers JS

Re: Bayonets at da ready
Made me laugh a few years back. While watching my Grandson in a football match, I overheard one of the boys mothers saying that her other son was joining the army. Asked how far he'd got in his application, she replied that he was waiting to go for an interview or whatever they do. She said he would make a very good soldier, due to how well he does on these computer wargames. He never loses, always scores well, and never gets killed.
I asked how he had done a few weeks later, and she said that they thought he was not up to it, and was turned down from joining.
So even his parents were not up to understanding how these things work.
