My Mum used to tell us about that too. She saw one get shot down over Kent, she was watching from the other side of the river in Dagenham. They were on the way to bomb London.

#62 Apparently they had safety on their side if attained the much higher altitude which the biplanes of the day couldn’t reach. JS

Re: BBC News
Post #62 Johnny. I have watch a few programmes about the Zeppelin raids in WW1. At first they could not be shot down as the bullets just passed through but someone came up with "tracers" which ignited the hydrogen gas. I have read they even bombed near a castle in Aberdeenshire instead of Edinburgh, the winds blow them way of course.
I found this of interest on the web. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_bombing_of_ Britain,_1914-1918
Bill.
It won't down load.Have checked!!

No John, I have never loved strangely, but my name has caused a few problems over the years.
But not as bad as my GF, he was John Bell Smith but when he just went as John Smith it did raise a few eyebrows.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: BBC News
Better than Gunsmith I suppose, and even worse if the Gun part got to be more than one and became Guns . What’s in a name one might say. As a kid all my Aunts and Uncles used to call me John Willy Wet from Dryland , that could have left me traumatised for life. Wouldn’t get away with it today , would be classed as child cruelty. Cheers JWS. PS if your grandfather had been christened Denis, he could have signed himself as DBS. Cheers JS

John.
That zeppelin that came over the Tyne wasn't looking for Cappy's place was he?

Re: BBC News
If Cappy had been around at the time would have had a big white cross painted on the roof hoping to get the insurance. JS.
