If he had of had a donkey jacket , John, he couldn’t have been classed as schooner rigged . Anyone working offshore for Wimpeys Marine all were supplied with donkey jackets with Wimpey on the back so they were recognisable as the toffs of the North Sea. Whereas if you worked for Zapata they used to go around as weren’t supplied singing it doesn’t matter we’re with Zapata. Think Tony worked for them . JS .

I did, got a free pair of Redwings boots. Which reminds me of a story about the greaser on a particular vessel. He had to help out with cargo handling and I was horrified to see him jumping around on deck, handling drill pipe, casings etc in bare feet. I asked him where his boots were, I don't have any he said, so I got him a brand new pair and issued them to him.
Next time out there he is again jumping about in bare feet, where's your boots I asked again, in the messroom he says, why aren't you wearing them? I asked, didn't want to get them dirty he said, ffs you need to wear them all the time you are working I told him -ok chief. So he starts wearing them but the very next trip there he is again no boots. So same rigmarole again, where are the boots? inside he said, go and put them on I tell him again, so off he goes and returns with the boots, totally unwearable as the they were baked hard like bell metal. WTF? I got them wet so dried them in cookies oven. So, managed to get another pair and gave instruction how to look after them. Turns out he had spent all his life in flip flops (Thai national very good kid and very intelligent, trained up really well and could do stuff some engineers on other boats couldn't even take in).

I believe that is the correct terminology John, but it is practised by many nationalities now not just the Asian originators.

I believe the term Hot Bunk was used by submariners in WW2, and maybe even WW1.Not room in those subs for a bed for everyone , certainly the WW2 HMS aLLiance at Gosport museum was so.

in 1963 I had a personal tour of HMS Olympus alongside HMS Maidstone the submarine depot ship. My uncle was serving on Maidstone and cleared it with the old man.
I would not like to sail in one of those things for sure.

HMS Onyx I believe was used in the Falklands to land SBS/SAS troops in Chile? Punta Arenas so they could infiltrate into Argentina and monitor Argentina Air Force movements. They supposedly kipped out in the torpedo room. No doubt some ended up with a pain in the Arenas.
I visited the Onyx while she was still in Birkenhead not a lot of room in those things. They do say it takes a special type to become a submariner. Ummm!!!! I bet it does.

simple answer - cost! expensive to build and expensive to run.
