What's happening with P&O ferries
Seeing reports that P&O have cancelled all sailings and told ships not to sail, ahead of an announcement about the company's future.
The union has told members to stay on board after speculation they are going to be replaced by foreign crews.
The company say that they are not going into liquidation.
Must be worrying for crews.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
A relative used to drive for p&o ferry masters and told me it was owned by an Emirates concern.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
News today said ALL shipboard personnel being made redundant. A few nationalities involved. I know there are a number of Dutch employed there.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
Apparently there services have only been suspended and will resume once agency staff, i.e. lower paid, have been employed. The 800 staff were sacked at an hour's notice.
P&O are owned by Dubai based DP world.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
I wonder how qualified and experienced these agency workers are. Have the company replaced the whole crew from captain down over.
Redundancy pay being offered but if you are not able to get another job it is just a cushion.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
The law used to be that is was the position was made redundant and the person occupying that post had to leave.
With position being made redundant it was against the law to employ anyone in the redundant position.
The only way that they could employ another person was if they mad significant changes to the job.
Wonder how P&O got round the law.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
Funny how the owners of P&O ferries based in Dubai, DP world claim the ferry operations are losing £100 million a year and this has become unsustainable.
DP world have sponsored the DP world golf tournaments January 20>23 in Abu Dhabi total prize fund $8 million dollars , the Dubai desert classic January 27>30th total prize fund $ 8million dollars. Another on the 3>6th Feb Ras al Khaimah championship prize fund $2 million dollars and again on the10>13th Feb Ras al Khaimah classic prize fund $2million dollars. So $20 million dollars in prize money in just over 3 weeks. Now maybe DP world are not fronting all the prize money but it is their golf tour and is part of the European Golf tour which forms part of what is known as the Race to Dubai. I am sure all those 800 employees so callously sacked today by some gutless excecutive will be offered a free round of golf in the gulf as part of their redundant package. Bloody disgraceful, shame on them. Ships should be commondeered by HMG as those vessels are a life line for the country to export and import goods. The existing crews should be offered their jobs back immediately. How a company can behave like this in this day and age has to be illegal. It is not only the jobs lost today but what about those who may have travelled a great distance because they have a reservation. Even worse those who may be waiting to return home from abroad. There will be lorries backed up with foods chilled or whatever on both sides of the channel. P&O ferries & DP world are going to be hit with massive law suits.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
Same old same old, it has never changed, the less they pay the more profit they make, time that the working people awoke to the way that Capitalism has always worked and will always work. A defeatist attitude maybe, but you can lead a horse to water ETC.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
If the company is sold and all crew paid of then the rule about taking same crew back does not apply.
There will be enough 'qualified' crew to man the ferries.
But like so many companies the bottom line is the main game.
