Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
Not sure about NUS here in Oz or UK but I know when we left the uni we got a great deal.
Uni staff were offered a package as the Uni wanted to down size on staff due to a merger with another institute.
After 14 years I got 8 weeks for each of the first 10, then 6 for each remaining year.
We also got another 6 weeks if we left before Dec 3 that year.
My wife had 12 years service.
All tax free I might add.

No John we then added it to our super.
Uni super was good then ,not sure about now, but staff had to pay 7&, Uni paid 14% and gov 3% so 24% in total.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
I didn’t get too involved with trying to work out the bits and pieces of the workings. I was 54 when I came out here to live . Basically in the maritime unions in their capacity of what the BSF was and that was as an employer of sorts as well as being the union... you paid 5% of your salary if permanently employed of your salary to them and they invested together with whatever monies came from shipowner or government. If not permanently employed with shipowner but just there filling in you only paid 2% of your salary to union and none was invested. However you received an increase of 27 % on top of your salary . The salary’s were about the best I have seen and way above US rates I was told by the various Americans I sailed with. So I have no complaints .Cheers JS

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
In the news they are saying that P&O are paying ridiculous money to some of the crew ie £2 per hour, i am wondering if they are counting the accommodation and food as the reason they can get away with this, if true. They are also saying that the engineers and navigation officers have been paid redundancy, and the re-employed on a new , less paid, contract. i may be mistaken, but i thought that if a position of work was made redundant, they could not employ someone at that position, ie the position was no longer required. thank god i am no longer in the workplace, , happily retired from this madness.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
Correct KT, it's the position that is made redundant not the person. For someone to be employed in that position significant changes to the job must take place.
DFDS, have allegedly stated if P&O get away with it they do exactly the same.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
The only reason I see to sack staff then reengage them or someone else; is to save on wages, been going on for years, made easier now as there is no opposition. That is the reason they changed from calling people Personnel to Human Resources, like Sheep or Cattle.

Re: What's happening with P&O ferries
If the company is sold to another not residential in the same country as the one being sold then the rules about taking workers back does not apply in most instances.
P&O have done a deal with some other shonky lot to take over.
It may well still be called P&O but with different owners not residential in UK it can be done.
Not just in UK but here in Oz and other countries as well.
It is a s***y way to treat good workers but not illegal.
