Not just ATMs but bank and building society branches are also disappearing I live near Johnstone, Renfrewshire and three banks and one building society have shut up shop in this area in the last few years now only have one bank in Johnstone.

That is going on in many countries now as the world moves toward a cashless society, mind you many of us were in that0 situation long before closures began.
AS to R Varney being the first to use an ATM.
Did some research into this, apparently the money he got was for his bus fare.
