When I was on the QE2, a woman washed a dress in the laundry, and went away while the washing machine was on, when she came back the dress had vanished.
No One knew where it was. A week or so later at the Captains Cocktail Party She saw another woman wearing her dress, A fight started and the two of them including husbands were put ashore in Tonga and left there to find there own way home..
    Rather entertaining.

Although we can all remember and refer to the good times at sea, there was also another side to being away on long ocean passages. No one knows really the number of seafarers suffering from melancholy and depression this would of varied from person to person as to their character. A lot of masters were accused of drinking too hard , but most of those were from the war years and more than likely had nightmares to live with it may have been a crutch for them. Most seamen played hard and worked hard, and this was one way of stopping being depressed by not given time to think about it. The few weird masters I sailed with and went into themselves, not telling anybody the next port of call, also as one post on here some time ago about having to clear out the forecastle head of all ships stores, for a suez canal transit, any of the mates could of said why this had to be done and thus avoid a lot of aggro. Most ships were happy ships, but have sailed on not so happy ones, where the problems usually stemmed through a lack of communication. Some of these weirdos seem to get their kicks from causing aggravation on board. We really did not have the foresight to see a person suffering from depression until too late, and by that time may have slipped over the side. We will never know. Maybe its best we don't. JS

Truth to tell she most likely borrowed the dress from the tiger in the first instance.

always found long runs at sea a peaceful time ......once in routine day after day just no pressure and could become nearly hypnotised by the day to day running of whichever job i was doing.......no family problems ....and nice to look just after your own affairs for a change......peaceful .......until i got ashore then didnt we all do it.......cappy

I , like most on this site enjoyed the run ashore and making a pratt of ourselves generally , drinking , whoring, and wasting what was left of our dosh, but i think when the orders came to sail it was nice to get back into routine, wash ship from top to bottom, settle down into watches etc, and then contemplate the next run ashore. Lets face it, we could not keep up the pace we were living ashore for more than a week or so !!! KT
