on Thames with my mother and paternal grandparents .My grandfather was an ARP warden well known by that famous not be
forgotten “ Put that Light out “ with of course a few added adjectives.!!**# ?? JS..

All this dressing up of old reminds me of that joke . Constable to a group of Ted’s, picking out one member in particular and pointing “ hey son does your toes go to the end of those Winkle pickers ? “. “:nah answers the Ted, does your head go to the top of your helmet ?”.

Although never had a big Pay off as the Trips were a lot shorter than what has been posted, the biggest i recall was around the 120 GBP mark, but that was good , as i was then only on about the 500 GBP a Year. That payoff was with Tips of course!
With all you lads talking about how much you paid off with I must admit I never made the ton, got close with £98.00 after a 6.5 month trip. I get fed up with youngsters telling me I don't appreciate how hard it is for them as I've never had it hard. Gawd that gets my back up so as I have every pay-off chit I showed my grandchildren my first one and explained the wage was for a minimum 56 hour week then pointed out the overtime rate. That kept them quiet.

First deep sea trip 9 months got a sub to go home with as I was a company man so on a salary , asked for a £5 er, purser said you only have £2 10 bob.
Not a lot to make it back to the UK from New York. The lads had a whip round. I went home with a £10er in me pocket, Got a bit of money sense after that trip.
