Re: SS United States
The United States is still hanging around waiting her fate.
Latest update has her being sunk late 2025 /26.
Bit like being on death row in the states takes years to be executed.

Re: SS United States
Yes James but in many states you get a choice.
The chair, firing squad or the needle.
One gut in Texas said he would take the chair if the governor held his hand when they pulled the switch.

Re: United States
A few years back.... I got to writing to an American Captain who was a frequent contributor of photos to Shipspotting.com ...He posted several of the United States as they passed her being towed to Turkey, where she would have the asbestos stripped out of her.
Why there was no company capable of this work based in gthe USA I have no idea..... Strangely, she was returned to the USA under tow.... Minus her lifeboats I gather. (There are tales around of the missing lifeboats of the Titanic.....curious & curiouser!)
This material was obviously what Gibbs was referring to:
"The ship's late designer William Francis Gibbs constructed the vessel with fireproof materials, saying, "You can't set her on fire, you can't sink her, and you can't catch her."

"Bit like being on death row in the states takes years to be executed."
That's mostly down to the Lawyers making money for decades as their "client" sits it out in prison.... Certainly not for any Humanitarian Consideration for sure.
Cheers.

Re: SS United States
Hi Steve
Unlike us old sea dogs shore side people don't realize that ships have a soul, and old seamen can see that ship suffering, to them its a load of steel to be got rid of, to us she is still alive but only just.
