mystery item
I recently came across this Certificate ? amongst some newspaper clippings I am sorting out - it was sent to me by a person who had sent me a bunch of other stuff - I have deliberately blanked the name to protect person id -
My Question - what is it for - as can bee seen on the document/ certificate ( ? ) its very old !
As I never sailed the high seas except as a Passenger on a Cruise Ship I draw a blank

Re: mystery item
Looks to me like some paperwork you might get if you signed on with the pool (shipping fed). Most seamen I knew didn't sign on, but stayed independent. If you sign on it was a bit like being in the services, you had to do basically what they said, within reason. You got slightly more pay, but not much else. It was like you worked for them, especially if you exceeded your leave time.
The above is just a guess though, lost most of my paperwork.

Re: mystery item
Hi Brian
As I remember it if you didn't sign with the pool you never got the dole. but if you signed a contract you got three choices, if you refused all three you got no dole and the included agreeing to be sent anywhere to join a ship. but if there were no ships available they paid you the dole until there was, in those days there where always some heap of rust laying in wait.
