Default Can you trust your GPS?

    https://splash247.com/msc-ship-agrou...-gps-spoofing/
An MSC container ship is aground off Jeddah with the cause of the grounding being it's GPS being spoofed. Apparently it's easy to fool GPS to give wrong position information with the equipment needed costing only around $100.
Obviously it appears that the bridge team have been relying on their GPS solely to give position information but they should have been using all other means, radar, visual, echo sounder, etc to cross check the accuracy of their GPS.

P.s. on another subject the MSC Sana is still awaiting tugs to arrive to tow it to port after it suffered major explosion in its engine room leaving three staff seriously injured.

MSC Sana? Surely you mean the Marsek Sana, the ship that suffereda crankcase explosion last week? Maresk say a specialised tug is on the way. They sayit is not always the closest tug that would dispatched. They say the weather is still good in the area so a more suitable opition has been hired for the recovery. Sounds to me as if the owners were not prepared to go for Lloyds openform (is that what they call it)

MSC yet again suppose when you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Any GPS can fail as I know.
Out in a 12 seater bus driving a group to a lunch meeting.
Using the GPS as we did not know the way.
Put in the address and bingo, lost.
The bloody thing gave us directions for a same named town in South Oz, only about 800 klm from where we were.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Was out with the boat today and can say the GPS plotter had the normal excellent accuracy on the Haringvliet , south Holland.

You need a satnav just to navigate around Washington (the one near me) its a right PIA, designed by someone who didnt have to live there.
