Anyway, this is the latest on those mysterious blasts on tankers loaded with russian crude. Divers will inspect the hulls of vessels loading crude oil in the ports in question.

To John Arton, and others of course: I don't know if this has been mentioned before, there is another site similar to gcaptain which has stories of current maritime topics, including incidents, accidents etc.
It is Marine Insight. Website is : www.marineinsight.com. Worth a look.

Re: Mystery of blasts on tankers
Had a Quick Look and saw the one about the query about the master going down with the ship and was it more or less mandatory. I can assure anyone who thinks it is , that they are living under false pretences. It was probably brought out by Hollywood to give a totally wrong impression. My guess is that a master especially a warship captain would not want to face penury on the result of his court martial. On a merchant ship it may have been a cowards way out of not wanting to face the music. The myth built up around Captain Smith of the Titanic if he had survived he would probably been held responsible for the loss by not acknowledging the small print in the Rules and Regulations for preventing Collissions at sea and speed to be moderate in fog and bad visibility. There is always someone to hang out to dry in any disaster. A master of any ship his crew and passengers and the safety of should be his first consideration , and he must have a mental condition if he wants to add his own name to the list of any losses. Going down with a ship on purpose shows a lack of mental stability. JS

Re: Mystery of blasts on tankers
But there have been a few who flew when the ship was in distress.
Costa Concordia comes to mind.

#13 A good example of a good companys master and the correct thing to do especially if you have any monetary investments in the vessel was Captain Carlsen and the flying Enterprise saga. After seeing all crew members off the vessel he remained solely on board until joined by Dancy mate of the salvage tug Turmoil. This was purely for insurance purposes for as long as there was crew on board the vessel , the ship was still the property of the owners. When the loss of the ship was seen to be unavoidable , both men left the vessel under their own wishes. JS

Re: Mystery of blasts on tankers
Thanks for jogging my memory John.
Had forgotten all about Cpt Carleson.
Recall going to the movies and seeing much of it on Movie tone news.
Was a big issue then with all the kids at school looking in to see how it would end.
Do they still make them as tough as that i wonder??

Re: Mystery of blasts on tankers
I think the blasts on those tankers are the result of some type of limpit mine, just not strong enough to sink the vessel but just attacks o Russian oil exports. They blamed Putin for blowing up his own gas pipeline , what a joke, One report said that a ship had dragged it's anchor for 9 miles? if thy knew that why didn't they stop it?

#18. I met him in 1954 in the seaman’s club in Bombay John , just an ordinary man complaining with the rest of us on the prohibition then in force and the two large bottles of beer we were rationed to. He was on a ship believe it or not called the “ Flying Enterprise 11”.: That’s two and not Eleven. Cheers JS.
