    They must have changed the rules since I went to sea, all the ships I was on had the chippy on the forecastle with the mate and with the anchor ready to drop in any emergency, probably no longer carry a chippy and it looked like no one on the bow. I know ships are lot bigger than the ones I sailed on and alot fasterm therefore they should have even more reason to be aware.

    Very interesting to read the actual cause of the blackout(s). I have to say that I am not surprised about the failures causing the incident. I was at sea for 44 years (20 of them as Master). The old saying "Worst things happen at sea" often comes to mind now that I am enjoying retirement.

    Initial report into the incident have pointed the finger at Baltimore port for not taking into consideration the effect that damage to the bridge could cause and to have put into action such procedures to mitigate or prevent such incidents occuring. The NSTB have a risk scale for bridges in critical areas. Apparently that Baltimore bridge was deemed to be at huge risk of damage.
