The last Cruise I was on, about 3/4 weeks back, was the Sky Princess, not an old boat. That yellow fog followed us the whole time, plus the black soot was there on everything aft, every morning. Maybe they were burning passengers for fuel?

John , Think you are confusing LPG ships are using LNG as main fuel source. Not saying they have never used LPG but the reason LNG is used it has a higher expansion rate than LNG. 1 cubic metre of Liquid LNG will generate 600 cubic metres of gas. LPG 1 cubic metre of Liquid LPG = 270 cubic metres of gas .
Just because you do not see the exhaust emissions does not mean they are not there.

The Lakonia Caught fire in 1963. My pal at school was on her at the time with his parents, caused quite a stir when they got back. His father was a hotel owner in the lake District and my pal and myself played rugby for our school.

I am not sure of the date she caught fire, but not the Lakonia, was an Italian Company ship, but had definitely been the Willem Ruys, as the ship was being built in Antwerp when the war started and was partly finished, so sat there right through the war, then after the war she was finished, it was a remarkable ship.

#43 Snap John that’s the ship the Lakonia I’m thinking off, caused quite a stir for this candidate at the M.O.T. In 1963. Was the last exam of the year as well. Re.your friend in Lake District…I had a time share at the bottom end of Windermere attached to a hotel which was an ex Dolly Blue Factory . Wasn’t the same place was it. Cheers JS.

Both have been used at different times.
Yes still some polution but nothing compared to the old coal or oil burners.

That dolly blue factory is now a very posh spa, my pals parents hotel was right on the lake shore just by the steamer landing stage at waterhead, Ambleside.

MSC Euribia is the second LNG-powered ship to launch for MSC, but notably she’s also the first ship in the world to launch as part of an existing class of ship, but with the new fuel type. She joins the Meraviglia-Plus class, alongside sisters MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa that are powered by traditional diesel.

Watched one of the most disgraceful episodes of a ship disaster last night The sinking of the Oceanus? off Cape Town around 1992
She had been around the buoys a bit with different companies and names, but she was now owned by a Greek Company. She was off the coast of South Africa down by Cape Town when she hit a storm, and everything shut down, there was no massage from the bridge, no one blew the whistle, and no sign of the officers. The bloke who took charge was a British entertainer who was on board with his wife a singer and two girl magicians, He went down below but could not go far as the water was climbing up the levels, so he went up on the bridge to find no one there, so he took the radio and started shouting Mayday, it was picked up by a bulker who asked for his position he explained that he was only an entertainer, they said without a position they couldn't find them, the the South African safety people got in touch, he explained that they had tried to launch the lifeboats but the were smashing against the hull. Eventually helicopters started arriving and one man abseiled down to the ship, he had two harnesses and explained to the entertainer that he had to go back up to guide the ropes, an showed him how to set people up. Just as he started sending people up the Captain and his officers arrived all dressed in their best uniforms, on deck from where they had been hiding, and he demanded that he be the first to ascend with his mates, so that he could coordinate the rescue The entertainer let him go up, then he sent up all the Passengers in twos to the relay of helicopters, he was the last man off, when he was landed he ended up in Hospital with a drip in his arm he was so stuffed, he rescued every passenger and crew on board. Apparently the ship had hit the bottom in a previous port and ripped off one of the boxes to do with the sewer, so during the storm every tap and toilet poured sea water into the hull., the ship eventually sank. But To my amazement the Captain wasn't even charged with

anything and was given a job as Captain on a Greek ferry with the same company.

Ps if it comes on TV worth a watch, as some one captured most of the disaster on camera, probably the entertiners wife.
