#10 Vic if she had cause to change over generators would it be possible to lose all power for a brief moment in time. Would have thought by todays standards that they build ships for dummies that this would be a built in safety factor as impossible to do would be to have no generator on line ? Could it have been crew negligence or lack of knowledge ? A ship with no power source has no means of steering and going onto emergency steering in closed and busy waters would not have sufficient time in all probabilitys.
There is one good point re. This post however , maybe the media is progressing in their ship recognition abilities and have learned from the ignorance of one of their kind who seemed never to understand that the vessel blocking the Suez Canal , was it last year ? , was not a Tanker. Cheers JS

Latest news is that six are dead, apparently not many on the bridge at that time.

Those dead are said to be in the cars that went over the edge.

On the net this morning a diagram of the bridge showing what are considered to be design faults which contributed to the accident.
Bridge was built in the 1970's.


Think the skipper of this one will lose his no claims bonus.

John, my knowledge is of the sixties and seventies.
The only scenario that I can think of, is that one of the alternator prime movers lost power, causing the alternator to draw electrical power, and attempt to power the prime mover.
In this scenario, the main switchboard reverse power relays would act within an instance, tripping the faulty alternator.
In this scenario other alternators could become overloaded and the protection devices would shut them down.
This happened to us on the Ranald, approaching the berth in Durban, not a lot can be done until all the safety devices are reset.
I am describing what seems a length narrative, but only takes seconds for the scene described to develop.
Its like a controlled chain reaction.

#14 if that’s true John then every chance he’s from the Crimea then and is Russian, the two vessels I was on out here that had Russian crew members were from that neck of the woods although manning Merchant ships they were naval trained as well and believe there they have a large nautical school in the Crimea probably more than one. Regardless of the present ongoing war there in the Ukraine there are a lot of the Ukrainians with Russian heritage. JS

Could be when they blacked out and the Em Gennie started up automatically, not sure of modern ships but all drilling rigs and drill ships have the Egen set to start automatically in event of a blackout usually within about 10 seconds. Normally this is tested weekly by dropping out the backfeed from the main swithcboard to the em switchboard. Can't figure out the black smoke but looks like an engine starting either main or a generator, can't see that amount of smoke coming out of a Em Gennie though unles it had not be run for months/years and was full of ****. Maybe attempting to start the main engine in reverse if it was not a CP prop.

The lights appeared to come back on within a minute or so, but that doesnt necessarily mean the main engine was back up and running.
