    Default Maersk Line Jig-Saw!

Just to show how researching Ship Details or Pictures can be,I'd like to just show how involved and frustrating it can get(if you let it get to you!).
Take the first generation of large 'A'' class container ships operated by Maersk Line, built 1975/6,and of c.27,000tonnes.
Mind you, with most of this class I've mentioned, you'd first have to find out which one was referred to,because with a large, early founded company like Maersk, the names were used over again for as many as 6 or so ships over the years.
Assuming you 've found this' class you want ,i.e the 75/6 class, you find the following:-

    ADRIAN MAERSK
    ALBERT MAERSK
    ALVA MAERSK
    ANDERS MAERSK
    ANNA MAERSK
    ARILD MAERSK
    ARNOLD MAERSK
    ARTHUR MAERSK
    AXEL MAERSK
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
Then you find out that some of these ships were lengthened not once, but twice, the second time being in 84,'some even being converted to container/ro-ro vessels when....wait for it:-

ADRIAN MAERSK was fitted with forepart of ALBERT MAERSK and renamed ALBERT MAERSK.
ANNA MAERSK was fitted with forepart of AXEL MAERSK and renamed AXEL MAERSK.
ANDERS MAERSK was fitted with forepart of ANNA MAERSK and renamed ANNA MAERSK.
ARTHUR MAERSK was fitted with forepart of ANDERS MAERSK and renamed ANDERS MAERSK.
AXEL MAERSK was fitted with forepart of ADRIAN MAERSK and renamed ADRIAN MAERSK.

So really ,ADRIAN becomes ALBERT,ANNA becomes AXEL,ANDERS becomes ANNA , ARTHUR becomes ANDERS and AXEL becomes ADRIAN.

Mind you,a similar thing happened in London Transport with the Routemaster buses. The 2,760 strong fleet were sent to Aldenham Works overhaul facility, capable of turning round 50 buses per week. The bodies were stripped from the chassis, and would not necessarily be reunited with their original bodies. Thus for instance Number 123 could enter in the morning and leave in the evening still numbered 123,but actually with the body of 456,and the chassis of 789. So,over a lifetime each Routemaster would have had several chassis and bodies----which used to upset the bus spotters! .Only those who knew each original body and chassis numbers could trace the history of each one.

Reminds me of that song, 'I'm my own grandpa". Just think you could sign on one ship and sign off another, as for the buses, don't worry there will be another one along soon.
