They were also known as the Welsh Navy the same as the one in Scotland was known as the Scots Navy ( Ben Line) the welsh navy I knew 2 who went with as midshipmen in Holts one the same as your adopted name Curry and his classmate called Rice, don’t think it did anything special for them except give them a false feeling of superiority . The book I have is, The Life and Times of Horatio Hornblower, Written by C. Northcote Parkinson. And in the fly leaf there is an inscription, To the memory of C,S,Forrester. There is also a great portrait of Horatio Hornblower painted by Sir William Beechy,The last Viscount Hornblower lives in South Africa.

A great number of countries now rely on general shipping companies such as MSC to move their cargo.
It is obviously cheaper to outsource than to own your own.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Des the book you have is the biography of a fictional person see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._Northcote_Parkinson
he also wrote a biography of another fictional person, the comedy character Jeeves, The gentlemans gentleman.

Surprised you never worked for Blue Funnel John , you had all the qualifications you being a Mason an all. But it would appear you preferred to sail around on some clapped out old rust buckets down the years.

#16 was a full time professional seafarer who went to sea to make a living. Not some part time ship repairer whose father had him christened with a first name of a Masonic name highly honoured among masons , what a disappointment that must have been . JS

Re: Alfred Holt/Blue funnel
A long time since I have been conned, after reading that about Parkinson's life on Wiki Leaks I take s me hat off to him. I would have sworn on a thousand bibles that what I had just read to be true. Hornblower was not a real person, blow me down wive a feather. I thank you
J Gower's for making me aware of that, if not for you I would have gone to my grave thinking I was with one of the great men of Britain
Thanks and Cheers Des

Des you have the good grace to admit you were wrong. Thousands would not have. Honesty is always the best policy. Those who tell fibs intentionally steer well clear of. Cheers JS.

Re: Alfred Holt/Blue funnel
#18 Reading about Parkinson there Des brings to mind a couple of years ago received an email from someone who must have seen my name and assumed I was a person he had met in the 1950s at some scholastic gathering in Singapore he had the wrong person I had to tell him , it was my cousin Bill Sabourn who at the time was lecturing at Launceston Nautical College in Marine Engineering so it may even of been one of Parkinson’s lectures that they met and way above my head .Didn’t get a chance to ask Bill as by this time he had gone to see his Maker. I had never heard of Parkinson before seeing J. Gowers post a very interesting man it seems. Cheers JS.
