Collision report
https://gcaptain.com/uk-issues-inves...in-baltic-sea/
This is the report on the collision between a cargo ship and a hopper dredger.
It sounds so familiar, lack of adequate lookout, distracted watch keeper etc, etc.

Re: Collision report
Not having a lookout is a bit like driving at night without your lights on, going by many reports of collisions these days it's lack of a proper lookout that is the problem, maybe the 15 years in prison may be a wake up call, that is if they get to hear of it.

Re: Collision report
Des the very first thing re the Rule of the road that is drummed into you at 15 and I still remember them near enough word for word was……These rules shall be followed by all vessels and seaplanes upon the High seas and in all waters connected therewith navigable by sea going vessels , except as provided in Rule 30 where as a result of their special construction it is not possible for seaplanes to comply fully with the provisions of Rules of lights and shapes , these provisions. Shall be followed as closely as circumstances permit.
The rules concerning lights shall be carried out in all weathers from sunset to sunrise during which time no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights that cannot be mistaken for the prescribed lights or interfere with the keeping of a proper lookout.
That is just part of the Preliminary before you ever get into the Rules .
Vessels at sea today due to their manning show scant regard in general of yesteryear in most cases. Cheers JS
I learned them before ever going to sea, simply because I misbehaved a few times, and it was punishment to get them as lines to write out and as I said previously . Number 9 and 15 being the longest and when you have to write them out a few hundred times you soon learn them. Cheers JS

#3 Re- reading didn’t sound right and realised had missed a small piece out so so should read ……..except such lights that cannot be mistaken for the prescribed lights or interfere with their distinctive character or interfere with the keeping of a proper lookout…….. JS

Now that's a rather damming statement . I've seen many the worse for drink but never drunk , are you sure ?.

Re: Collision report
Even if the rules of the road are known its all forgotten if the watch keeper is inebriated!
