Default Rescue of Hindangers in 1958 by City of New York, Ellerman Lines

    Evening all,

I've been going through some papers left by my late brother, master mariner Frank Bramhill b1939 d 2016.

In a small album were these snaps of his ship, The City of New York, which in 1958 rescued four engineers (two subsequently died) from the Norwegian (?) cargo ship Hindanger.

CoNY took Hindanger in tow and delivered her safely to the Cape Verde Islands.

At the front of the album Frank records CoNY's history: built 1947 in Newcastle, GRT 8420, L500', B64' D32'; twin screw steam turbine; regular run Liverpool to Cape Town 15 days; Sold in 1967 to9 Greek buyers and renamed Kava Matapas; July 31 1969 left Keelong for breaking at Koashung, Taiwan.

Frank died after a struggle with dementia in 2016, aged 77. He worked for Ellerman then British Railways at Harwich. He left the sea after getting his master's ticket owing to chronic sea sickness. He subsequently worked for Harwich Navyard; Powell Duffryn at Shoreham; the Greater London Council; Buoywork at Amlwch, Anglesey, and Ipswich Port Authority.

I'll be holding on to the album for a while so if anyone wants sharper quality prints, please get in touch.

    Will

Funnily enough William I was in Kaoshung about the same time as your brothers old ship was being broken up totally unaware of course. We were there as a port of Refuge . The ship I was on went to the knackers yard about a year later even managing to get back to Europe , I had baled out well before this of course. Old photos are usually useful to younger members of the family growing up can you not keep them for prosterity? JS
