Merchant ship captains kept a daily log on weather conditions etc.
When they returned to Germany the Bureau collated the information. On the commence of a voyage the Captain would receive a document indicating where the best course for the time of year may be found.
I have had a search on the internet and found this. 1868 Norddeutsche Seewarte. (North German Naval Observatory ) (1868) The site has a large address I hope this is correct.

Yes and we are a happy gang and don't go around trying to thrust our views, whether they be right or wrong, down other peoples throats, try and enjoy life instead of constantly carping on what's wrong with the world, and this country in particular. Lighten up, remember there are very few spring chickens on this site and the Grim Reaper may be just around the corner. In the words of the song - try a little tenderness- surprise yourself - try enjoying life, take a vacation from doom and gloom, you know you want to.

And be honest with people ,if there is one thing a proper seaman doesn’t like is falsifying their own particulars , lying who you are is unacceptable among shipboard people may be what is done with casual repair gangs , but not cooped up on a ship for long periods. Believe in some cases it is a criminal offence. PS to Ivan’s postcard , from Timbuktu , JS

#102. There is a post somewhere on meteorological vessels under the British flag . Certain ships were picked out by the dept. and the owners approached to see if they would participate . I was on 4 or 5 vessels as such . Radio reports were sent every 6 hours in a numbers code, from all parts of the globe. They consisted of Time in GMT , position , wind force and direction on the Beaufort Scale, sea and swell height height direction and period, Sea temperature , Cloud coverage in eighths, Cloud types, barometer, temperature, wet and dry bulb barometer reading , Dew point, and any other phenomena’s pertaining to weather. This was in the 1950s . The weather reports were as accurate as those given out today. Which are satellite reported. Most masters of ships in those days if they had the position of barometric pressures in different areas could make out their own synoptic chart.
Today however even that is done for them by Pushing a button. I always used to wonder what they wanted sea temperatures for , today I know why. Cheers JS

For your info Mr Curry, one has to be polite.
Dr. Google is the site often used by misguided people looking for medical advice.

But as you appear healthy you may have no use for it.

I have never heard of Dr Google John. Like most people I know if they need medical help they go see a GP who may refer them onward to a specialist.

As a first trip Mate I was well and truly kippered by sea temperature - on a tanker. We had cleaned all the tanks ready for a cargo of lubricating oils , all of which are very susceptible to contamination by water. All the tanks were clean and dry on arrival at the loading port of Willemstad in Curacao - agreed and approved by an independent surveyor. I was very pleased with myself. It was December and we duly loaded a part cargo there. Next port was New Orleans where we would load further grades of Lub oil. On arrival alongside another inspector duly arrived on board who swiftly failed all the remaining tanks. There were pools of water everywhere. I could not understand it. The inspector smiled and said "Ship Sweat - The Caribbean sea is very warm yet the river Mississippi at this time of year is very cold and condensation has ocurred on both ships bottom and sides." The crowd were not happy to have to rig vent fans all over again but by the following evening, all was well again. In my ignorance I had thought that ship sweat was something for cargo ships.
Ah well, you learn every day.
