Re: The Gut
I was on the Egyptian, Ellerman Papayani, August 1958, and we called into Malta, and made the usual trip ashore down the Gut. Entertainment just watching all the goings on, mainly RN guys there, dozens of little bars, all trying to chat up the girls, and getting twisted for drinks, and of course getting no where. ````my only real memory was i met two brothers there in one of the bars, i had gone to school with both of them, one RN, one Royal Marine. Took them back for a look round the Egyptian , and they thought our accommodation was brilliant, from memory it was not that good, but to them they thought it was. that was the only time i visited Malta.

Re: The Gut
I was on the EGYPTIAN, July 1953 and ashore in Malta, a few ales, on a Gary somehow, the driver fell off , the horse galloped down the Gut, on the bend at the bottom it crashed and turned over outside the EGYPTIAN QUEEN bar
We went to the bar up stairs, there was a man playing the Piano
f Fred stood next to him, and started to sing, the pianist stopped playing, and shouted, " The Bum cant sing"
Fred shouted. "The Bum cant play a piano".
then two Bouncers got Fred and threw him down the stairs. I jumped on one and both of them threw me down stairs.
We were both covered in blood and bruises so we decided to go back to the ship

Re: The Gut
Walking up the :gut' we noticed a stream of water along the gutter, but no rain.
Went into bar had some beers and listened to the Juke box playing.
One of the lads needed a leak and was told behind the curtain in the corner.
There he discovered the cause of the stream in the gutters outside.
The bucket, no doubt like many more, was full and overflowing out to the street.
Couple of days later one of the lads had hired a motorbike, something he did not know much about.
His misjudgment saw him take off at a rate of knots and straight over the side into the water.
Never did find out if they got the bike back.

Happy daze John in Oz.
