Sargasso Sea.
I've just been reading about a huge swathe of seaweed heading for the US, I always thought it was a regular thing on the approaches to the West Indies. I heard old stories of sailing ships getting stuck in this seaweed. Whenever we go to the Caribbean on a cruise, I point it out to my Mrs, so she's known about it for a few years. I'm sure there was a sea area of that name, but in the news it's a bit different.

Hi Johnny. I think all I knew about the Sargasso Sea, a large area of sea weed and the European eel went there to breed. Looked it up on the internet.

Re: Sargasso Sea.
It always puzzled me calling a large area of he Atlantic the Saragossa Sea, an area covered in some sort of weed, it was still the Atlantic. Anyone know how it was so named?

Hi Vernon.
Thanks mate , it looks like lately the weed helps in the depletion of oxygen, maybe also helps with the increase in bad storms now hitting the area.

John
Not sure, my Auntie used to bring some for my mother when she was on her rounds selling her cockles, I should put that a bit better! She used to carry a huge basket of Cockles on her head, one strong woman.
