Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the arrival on 25 November 1962 of Shaw Savill's DOMINION MONARCH (1939-1962) at the breakers in Japan.

I have posted in my blog "Wanted on Voyage" a new monograph on this, the greatest of all ships built to serve the U.K.-New Zealand run and the largest ever combination cargo-passenger liner.

A great ship with so much history behind her.
A lot of stories, how true not sure but it was at one time claimed she set a record for the largest number of DR given to crew.
At one time banned from the NZ coast.

In the Wellington Maritime Museum there is a model of her, large and one of the best such models seen.

There was some years ago a couple of members who had served on her, but now crossed the bar I think.

Indeed a great Ship with a good History behind her!

Heard a story or two about her though concerning the very hard work, the Catering Staff had at stages while Serving on her!

Bring back the Past! If only!

My Father travelled on this vessel when it was used as a Troop ship during WW2.
if I recall correctly. UK to Aden in 1943

In January 1943 she departed England bound for India via Freetown, Cape Town and Durban in convoy with the Sibajak, Duchess of Richmond and Arundel Castle. By February 1943 they had reached Durban and set off bound for Aden and Bombay in a very large convoy of troopships escorted by HMS Jasmine among others. They arrived in Bombay in March 1943.
