Lairds have serious competition in the Cruise ship sector. H&W have had 2 Carnaval vessels docked there earlier this year. Stena line dock their vessels (6) that serve the Irish sea routes.
There is a company called MJM group who are based in Newery NI seem to be recognised as leaders in cruise ship refurbishment. Think this was taken in 2020. The size of that dock at H&W you could put the whole Stena fleet in there and there would still be room for the same again.stena.jpg The dock is 556 metres long and 93 metres wide. I believe there is not a ship at sea today that would not fit into that dock.

I believe they do fit outs on new builds. They signed a contract with Ferguson to fit out the new Ferries being built.

I was in that dock when they were building a VLCC (her name escapes me), you have to be in it to appreciate its enormity, they had roadways marked out and also traffic lights in places.

As for those Scottish ferries what a fiasco, but look on the bright side, by the time they are delivered they won't need those disputed main engines, sail will be back in fashion.

Ivan, they won't sail on gas for at least nine months after delivery, as someone forgot to order sensors, which allow the engines to run on gas.

In theory there is no reason why not, but in practicality there are many problems.

Finding suitable crews could be a problem, then the cost of wages, that could be the biggest down turn.
Any new MN would have to compete with other nations who pay at the lowest level possible.

Then if you got a crew would they be prepared to be away from home for long periods of time?

Conditions have changed so much since out time at sea to the extent we would not recognize most of it.
Yes on board may be better, but with many ships now sailing with such small crews the isolation could be too much for most.

As a land surrounded by sea and in need of imports there is a very good case for it's own MN, but cannot see it ever again.
