Re: Visited Ports.
The ship Cappy came home on from Oz as DBS , the second or third mate he described years ago , think hs name was Nash , he was 2 years older than me and think he went to the same Council School . So when I was 12 and him going on for 15 and nearly all the boys I knew happily puffing away on our penny woodbines in secret. Used to shout taunts at the older boys . Nash”s nickname was Nasher and we used to shout at him Nasher smokes Pasha and he used to go mad. Years later I relieved him on a couple of ships and he never mentioned it, so I never did either. Funny how little things stick in the mind. JS

John.
"He smoked Pasha" Just as well you didn't remind him, At an older age that could have been described as rude.

Re: Visited Ports.
For those who smoke or smoked, especially state express 555 did you ever try them in Indonesia?? I used to smoke and in the early 80s was fortunate enough to be sailing on a small product tanker for an extended period around various ports in Sumatra, Java and the Celebes Islands one night ashore in Makassar having run out of my usual Marlboro I bought 20 state express. What a mistake that was it was like sucking on a clove I have no idea how they are made or other brands which have a spice smell and taste. The outcome of this was that I stopped smoking and have never smoked since.

Re: Visited Ports.
Smokes in Indonesia come in all manner of sorts.
Smoking there is almost a way of life for the men, do not see many females smoking, but then of course they are always working.
But the smell from some makes you wonder exactly what is in them, maybe old dung or even the odd banana leaf.
But some do smoke the funny stuff though possession of such can get you into a bit of trouble.
9 such guys got a 303 lesson on that one some years back.

Re: Visited Ports.
WE were short of cigarettes when loading in Bizerte in N Africa, so bought enough to get us back to UK for Christmas. They were called 'Prix' . Must have been after people who smoked them. Most went over side unsmoked.
