Re: Visited Ports.
I spent the grand sum of one pound on a 35 mm camera back in about 61.
I still have a stack of old black and white photos from way back then.
At one time in an album with names of places, but the albums fell apart over the years so now I look at them and wonder, 'where the hell is that'?

Re: Visited Ports.
Like previous posters I never had a camera and never kept a journal much to my regret. It is only when i look at my discharge book that I remember some of the ships that I was on. A total of 41. I know that I have visited over a hundred countries, but how many ports I do not know. I was always cautious about cameras after an incident on a ship in Shanghai in 75, one lad left his camera in the the crew mess unatended for a laugh unbeknown to Him one other guy took a snap of his mate mooning on it. On arrival all cameras had to be handed over with any un developed film to the army which were then developed for them and the snaps were handed back. Nothing was said about the indecent snap which must have been destroyed but there was some very scared guys on the ship for a few days.

Re: Visited Ports.
I love photography not very good at it but now and again you get a belter of a photo. Thanks to digital photography if it is rubbish just delete so it makes life a lot easier and cheaper.
But has to be said with the improvement in mobile phone cameras even carrying a camera these days is no longer worth while, unless you are a serious photograher that is.

Re: Visited Ports.
Indeed so James
As i still have no less than 4 actual Cameras here gathering dust, sadly as two of them are quite Modern and Expensive , but as said i now only make use of the Mobile Camera, takes great sgots and has a few various different things on it! Like the Panarama Shot Mode its Great!
Must start looking at either trying to sell a couple of my old ones, but then who knows in time what they may be worth?? If anything at all that is LOL

Re: Visited Ports.
I was at sea for 14 years then almost 30 on rigs World Wide, always carried a camera, a cheap Russian Zenith SLR later replaced with a Minolta SLR and then a digital camera when they came out, and untill the start of digital photos always took slides. I have scanned all the slides to digital images and wrote up stories of each ship and rig mainly for my kids and close family and as was said earlier a few eposides had to be edited out. I found looking at the photos actually brought back memories long forgotton also as I was writing the memories down more came back, I wish I had taken more photos but slide film was expensive in those days, no excuse now with digital cameras you can take as many pics as you like and just bin the bad ones at no cost. I have also found that more memories have come back when reading of members on this site and others exploits of when they were at sea.

Re: Visited Ports.
I used to upload my digital photos to USB sticks , then when that was full transfer them to an external hard drive. I also used to have a Photo Bucket account which at the time was free. But like a lot of these things if you want to keep the account you now have to pay for the privilege. So thanks but no thanks those photos are now it would appear the property of Photo Bucket. There is now THE CLOUD ?

Re: Visited Ports.
One of the first things I bought when we went to Japan was a "Pigeon' 35 mm camera. Unfortunately, all photographs lost in cyclone Tracy, 25 December 1974.
Sailed with an electrician on the Heathmore called ?? Smart who came from Bristol. He had a 8mm movie camera and did lots of filming both onboard and ashore. Then edited and made ful length films. He had a Christmas at sea which was filmed on 3 different ships over a period of some years. when splced together, shore people would not have known there where different ships involved. Love to see them now.

Re: Visited Ports.
Like so many of you I never had a camera, but was lucky to sail with some shipmates that did and had extra prints made to share with us. Thanks to them I have some photographic memories to look back on.
One thing I did do was to buy postcards of the ports visited, which I still have.
Bill.
