Outspan
On Talking Pictures TV there was a 15 minute film about South African fruit coming into the UK in the 1950's and how it was distributed.
The opening sequence was the Capetown Castle arriving at Soton and discharging its cargo.
Interesting programme.
No doubt it will be repeated.

Re: Outspan
Hi Vic,
Was on the Rotherwick Castle a 10,000 ton cargo ship.
Full of Outspan Oranges.
When cleaning the holds we ended up playing Cricket with them, with plenty of orange balls and dunnage bats & stumps. We were on our way rejoicing.

Re: Outspan
Much the same as when on McAndrews boats running to Spain in the Orange season, cleaning hatches we threw thousands of oranges over the side. When you think of the wastage of that, but of course no way of salvaging them.

#5 what was the one called near to the Del Monico where the upstairs balcony was open and where most sat drinking. It was built in the old colonial style. JS Thinking back though it may of been the Carlton ? JS

Re: Outspan
You may be thinking of the old Grand Hotel on the Corner nead Del Monica , bit lower Down towards the Station. Nice Upstairs Verandah! Overlooking the Parade Ground as well.
