Ah, painting the ships funnel, all the ships that i was on this was a *job and finish*, ie we would rig the bosuns chairs or stages, and the next day set to with the paint and brushes, forget *smoko*, just bash on, clean up, and ready for the shore run, rest of the day free. That is a blast from the past Robert.
When I was on the Port Dunedin in NZ in mid 1950 this beautiful ship, Port Auckland arrived. It could have been when there on the Gothic in 1951/2/3 but we, I recall, were all smitten.

Robert, obviously, the bunting indicates Port Auckland was on her maiden voyage and the timing is definitely mid June, 1950. You, Robert would have been aboard when I took that photo and your group had theirs taken. That is a random photo of the Port Dunedin I found but here is the old lady at that time in Lyttelton, South Island

Yep happy days Keith, Dito, I wonder if you could give todays seaman a job and knock, The foremast was always a good one also 8 hours booked for about 3 hours work happy days mate Terry.

Didn't realise it was your dad. He was lucky to have been on the maiden voyage of Port Line's new style vessels. Port Line operated under the name MANZ (Montreal Australia New Zealand) Line and Port Auckland would, I expect, have been part of that service meaning your dad would have had a couple of trips or more on that particularly pleasant route. Port Dunedin was direct London - NZ. I sailed on three Port Line vessels. Great memories.

Was on the Port Auckland in 1967. Great trip double DR and Mad Mackaskill was Bosun.

The 50s 60s on the coast in NZ probably produced the most DRs on record. Great times had by all. Oh, for a return run.

Funny place that, if I recall a couple of ships were banned from the NZ coast back then.
But they are an odd lot at the best of times.
Any one who eats Fush and Chups and drinks a Sex pack must be a bit odd.
