Nah John, hospitable, kind, and welcoming was how I found the friends I made on my many visits, some yet as friends when expats in Fiji.

We have been to NZ five time now, including being in an earthquake on Boxing day 2010 Christchurch.
Will be back there again at end of year.
Yes they are a very friendly nation but beware who you ask for directions!
We asked one very nice young lady one day and I am still trying to work out exactly what she said.
Have seen some wonderful places over the years and the train rides are excellent.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

How long would they have been in Auckland before they were on their way back?
    Thank you

If you mean the ships not the jumpers, they would do the coast Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Dunedin, maybe calling into Lyttleton on the way back up.
If you mean the jumpers, they would either do a little jail time and be placed on a ship which was short handed, or sent home DBS, or many like my brother allowed to stay.

Staying in port back in the 60's in Oz and at times NZ could mean a long time.
The unions took a liking to shipping in those days and were not keen to let some go.

Just wondered how long the ship would have been in New Zealand?

I don't think he jumped that ship!

A lot of variables in the cargo to discharge and load means it is a bit like how long is a piece of string. We once had 7 weeks in Aukland with a full discharge and half load there. very enjoyable. If you look in his discharge book at the signing on date and pay off date and take about 2 months off for the time to get to Kiwi and back, that will give you a rough idea of long on the Kiwi coast, of course that's assuming it was a straight out and back run, hope this helps you Robert.

#19. Must have been a fast ship. Distance from
London to Auckland via the panama is 11376 x 2 = 22752 nautical miles
Time on ship is 57 days .
Find out the speed of ship and see theoretically what you are left with for any time in port.
Cheers JS. Allow for a day lost going through the canal JS.
A 15 knot ship would take an estimated passage time of 65 there and back allowing 2 days for canal transits, and no other stoppages . Do you have the ports signing on and paying off ? To show he was definetley on the ship. JS
Rereading the post do you mean he was on the coast for 57 days which is quiet believable JS
