i have just spent a good half hour or so looking at hamburg docks ....filled with vessels of all types loading and unloading ....worth a watch ...google ....the port of hamburg 1938.....cappy

In the early 60s Hamburg was my favourite port of call, in fact it was the home port, i was on the Baltic Trader, one of UBC boats, in fact there were two UBC boats running every 6 weeks or so, Mediterranean and back to Hamburg. I those days it was a great run ashore, and cheap, with something in the region of 11 marks to the pound. ! was on the ship for 15months, and only touched UK once. The main attraction of course was a young lady in Hamburg which always meant a comfortable few days, usually about 4 days loading.

I think the "HARBORSTRAUSS" commonly known as 10 CENT ALLEY is in Hamburg, Big green gates at each end. Can you see it Cappy or even been there ?

Herbert Strasse, (also known as Winkel Strasse). Joined my first ship in Hamburg and stayed in a small family run hotel literally just outside the bottom end of the street. Unfortunately I only had £3 to my name so could only go window shopping (about 3 times a day).
Got chucked out of oompah band bier keller as we couldnt afford a bier. The bowling alley was the cheapest on The Reeperbahn. After our money was blown we could only walk around and go back to hotel for meals and as many beers as we could neck with the food.

Never was in hamburg tony .....but brake near bremen had a good time there with all the trimmings only prob was she had a photo of her boyfriend on the bedside ..a bosun on german ships ......it was a block of flats and every time a door clanged during the night ....ihoped fervently it wasnt the deusher bosun ....lol ....happy days

#4 Went into one of the night clubs with the mud wrestlers all females, beautiful summers evening the sun still out. When came out the sun was still out , what I didn’t realise it was the following day, must have drunk and sobered up a few times , mind I was only 18. Had the shakes for 3 days had to keep my hands in my pockets . Don’t know how I afforded it unless it was one of the wrestlers feeding me with drink. Must have cost more than 3/9d. JS

I can well remember the nights ashore there, and sometimes getting back to the ship via the tunnel was not always easy.

Was lucky, as most of the crew were German, and knew their way around some of the better spots ashore.

#3 Thought I saw you there one night inside one of the barred windows Graham putting a show on for the bystanders outside , was no need to sing that song behind the green door as , as you say they were barred gates. I never saw them closed however as the street outside the bird cages was a through street and everyone used it. Beat the cages in Bombay. JS.
