On most UCL it was mainly English beer outbound then Orangeboom homeward bound
Pints were about 9 pence each with cans available to drink there or to take back to cabin.
But which ever the barman would always open them before passing them to you.

General crew only allowed beer but officers could have spirits either in the bar or a bottle in their cabin if they wanted.

On the ore carriers second time round in1973 , we carried barrel ale in the custom built bar at 10 p a pint . The Chief Steward used to give the money out in plastic cash bags of 20 x 10 pence pieces , all beer or spirits was paid in cash over the bar. The beer was Tennents and 40 pints to a barrel carrying about 150 barrels was usually the norm and was topped up to this every time back in the uk . The longest trip was usually 6 weeks , so depending from past experience of the people who were there this 15O barrels may here been slightly underestimated and a few more ordered in reserve for the longer trips .
