    Default Vision of the Seas

Interesting article on th M. O. S. about the new shipmaking it's debut.
It carries over 9,000 crew and passengers.
Powered by 3 diesel electric thrusters of 20,000 kW each and 3 bow thrusters of 7,500 hp.
Using all propulsion units she can travel at 22knots.
Nobody told the journalist bow thrusters are primarily used for docking and not for sailing from A to B.

If the old LSA rules still applied Vic she would be barely visible , having to be able to carry lifeboats on each side capable of carrying 9000 persons , think of the poor old 3. Mate before a visit by the mot surveyor for an lsa survey having to count out 9000 lifejackets , and the poor surveyor having to check them all individually. Cheers JS

Then the inflatable life rafts which I was once informed by a skipper must be changed every 6 months.
There has to be enough of them to carry all on board.

Can’t remember the servicing period and has probably changed since my time the same as a lot of the regulations. One of the ships recently mentioned had condemned lifeboats and the life rafts were not serviced the nearly Year I was there. But there again she had been under various flags , but even so was under the Gibraltar flag when I was there. JS

Should have put a previous post to Graham on this page rather on someone else’s who was looking for a relative , don’t know how to move it , so standing by for a bollocking .JS

    Re liferafts,
They must be serviced annually by an accredited service station.
John in Oz, the 6 monthly period he was quoted I would guess is that due to the large number of literature carried onboard cruise ships, they stagger the servicing, 50% of them at a time, otherwise the service station would be overwhelmed by the numbers and unable to complete all services in the time frame allowed. For a merchant ship with only 2 liferafts we still had to allow a 24 hour time frame for the 2 raftsto be collected, transported to the service station, serviced and returned to the ship.

John, you are correct it is 50% every six months.
Saw one cruise ship in port having some removed and replaced, a never ending process with so many to deal with.

It’s “Wonder of the Seas” , latest in Ultra Quantum Class built in France. Vision is a much older and smaller “Vision” Class ship. Horrible things. Wouldn’t go on them with a free ticket.
